With a guaranteed minimum of EUR 22,500 per year, the Red Cross receives a percentage of all Thorco Africa’s earnings, which they use for their developing projects in Africa. Thorco Shipping has also established an agreement with Red Cross to offer “Thorco Africa” as a transportation vessel of aid cargo to Africa and for hosting events in aid of Africa. In this way Thorco Shipping ensures that it supports the trade and contribute to the development in Africa through its core business.
CEO of Thorco Shipping Thomas Mikkelsen elaborates, “Our agreement with Red Cross is a way to implement the idea of social responsibility in an industry with no traditional relation to this kind of engagement. We may not change the world with this project, but it is a start, and we truly hope we can inspire other, more conservative industries to take similar initiatives”.
Thorco Africa had its official launch in Japan on Friday the 30th of September 2010. Following the ceremonial practices for launching, “Thorco Africa” was christened by its ambassador and strong front figure, Koyuki Kato, one of Japan’s most famous actresses known in the West for her role in “The last Samurai”, and slid into the ocean with owners of Thorco Shipping, Christian Stadil and Thomas Mikkelsen by its side.
Since then, “Thorco Africa” has sailed the world’s waters in its quest to ensure funding for the Red Cross. In October 2011 it reached the shores of Europe for the first time. Thorco Shipping celebrated the success of combining business with social responsibility through an event at the harbor in Rotterdam and on the ship itself, where the company handed over 175.000 DKK of the first nine months of “Thorco Africa” earnings in 2011 to Red Cross representative Jens Grønning
Thorco Africa has since continued its journeys around the harbors in the world, securing approximately 500.000 DKK to the Red Cross. Thorco Shipping is looking forward to further support the Red Cross and developing projects in Africa in the future.

First visit in Europe
In the beginning of October 2011 Thorco Africa visited a European harbor for the first time. We marked it with an event at the harbor in Rotterdam and on the ship itself.
We invited business partners, clients and customers of the Thornico companies onboard, to show how we in Thornico combine business with charity. In the first nine months of 2011 Thorco Africa collected 175.000 DKK. During the event in Rotterdam, Red Cross' representative, Jens Grønning, was given a cheque for the amount.
At the event Christian Stadil explained: "The project may not change the world but it is a beginning and can hopefully also inspire other, more conservative industries to take similar initiatives".
